How to Setup the Oculus Rift

A few steps are needed to get an Oculus Rift up and running. The Blocksmith Viewer runs through the SteamVR system, and only requires one change in the Oculus app settings described in step 3.

Basic Setup

1. Set up the Rift on a VR-capable computer

The Oculus Rift needs to be set up on a computer with the proper technical specifications for running Virtual Reality. The computer should have:
Operating System: Windows 7 64 bit or greater
Processor: Intel i5-7400 3.0GHz equivalent or greater
Memory: 1TB HDD
RAM: 8GB DDR4 RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 1060 3GB
Ports: HDMI 1.3 and 3x USB 3.0 plus 1x USB 2.0

2. Download the Oculus app and go through its tutorial process

Connect the Oculus Rift to the VR-capable computer using the provided USB and HDMI cables. Then download the Oculus software on the computer to run the setup. Through tutorials, it will guide you through the entire set up of the Rift. It can be found here:

3. Enable Unknown Sources in the Oculus app

After setting up the Rift, open Settings in the left area of the Oculus app. Go to the General tab. Then next to Unknown Sources, click to allow content from unknown sources. Enabling this setting is absolutely necessary for the Blocksmith Viewer to work on the Oculus Rift.
